Essay
People have different views on the impact of tax increases on the environment. While some argue that the environment would benefit greatly from this, I believe there are several better solutions available.
On the one hand, taxing specific industries does decrease pollution. It will push companies to invent and find cleaner production methods, leading to less pollution. Meanwhile, cleaning companies pay lower taxes, gain higher reputations, and improve their competitiveness. Perhaps the best example of this would be recycling materials, which are widely used in products with lower cost and pollution. The beverage industry does this best. Many companies have campaigns to recycle packaging such as bottles and redeem consumers for beer or point cards. Also, they offer discounts when people bring their mugs to the store.
On the other hand, I agree with those who think other methods are better at reducing pollution. Encouragement is more effective than enforcement. From a personal point of view, providing coupons for more environmentally friendly products will change people’s consumption behavior to some extent, leading to more companies turning to cleaner producing methods and reducing pollution. From a company’s point of view, if it invents new technology that results in a massive reduction in pollution, it could have an incredibly positive impact. For example, Tesla has created electric vehicles and, combined with clean energy sources like solar, produce significantly less pollution than their peers. Ultimately, Tesla became an industry giant, setting off a storm of reform in the auto industry.
In conclusion, despite taxing industries having an immediate effect, a more significant impact would result from subsidies for businesses and residents. Governments should pursue this more favorable strategy.
