[IELTS] Large Number of Young Adults

Discuss/Opinion Question:

At the present time, the population of some countries includes a relatively large number of young adults, compared with the number of older people. Do the advantages of this situation outweigh the disadvantages?

My Answer:

In recent years, young residents have become a major proportion of the population in some countries. Although there are certain drawbacks for countries with this kind of population structure, I believe that the individual, social and economic benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

On the one hand, countries with large proportions of young adults may encounter some problems. Firstly, an oversupply of labor could intensify competition for employment, leading to an increase in the unemployment rate. Considerable numbers of students may be unemployed immediately after obtaining their degrees and lose their ambitions for the future. Secondly, if governments are unable to meet the demands for the provision of housing and public services, such as hospitals and transportation systems, an abundance of working-age adults will result in higher rates of poverty and falling living standards. Finally, the excessive unmet needs of young people might cause social problems like theft and robbery.

On the other hand, these countries could gain huge benefits from the youth population. A young and energetic workforce is more likely to propose newly outstanding ideas and is good at creating an atmosphere of innovation to increase creativity. For instance, recent graduates tend to work in the technology industry where is famous for open workplaces and innovative outputs. Also, young people are receptive to new technologies, such as electric vehicles and products made from recycled materials, which will make the world more productive and efficient. Another advantage is that young people are fearless about starting their own business, which can boost the economy, pay more taxes, and provide jobs for society.

In conclusion, while the worries about too many young citizens seem to be diverse, I think the young population is better than an aging society.
